Advanced resources for naval testing
From signature measurement tracks to a fully-equipped naval live firing range, at FMV Naval Test Ranges you have access to all the cutting-edge test systems and infrastructure you need to conduct your next test and evaluation (T&E) mission.
As a result of decades of work in T&E for the development of Swedish submarines, surface ships and naval weapons, FMV’s Naval Test Ranges have built up extensive T&E infrastructure and facilities – including one of Europe’s largest facilities for surface explosion trials.

Härnösand Naval Range infrastructure
A large, isolated test range located in the secluded Bay of Bothnia. The main activities conducted here are the live firing of ship-based weapon systems and heavyweight subsurface explosion trials.
- Restricted sea and air space according to your needs
- Control centre
- Harbour
- Workshops
- Flight Termination System (FTS)
- Surveillance radar systems
- Tracking radar systems
- Electronic warfare threats such as jammers and target acquisition systems
- GPS-jamming system
- Maximum subsurface charge weight up to and including 1000 kg of TNT equivalent
Target systems
Aerial drones:
- Kratos BQM167i and MQM 178 FireJet (in-house)
Surface targets:
- Fixed customised surface targets
- Remotely controlled high-speed unmanned surface vessels (USV) such as Combat Boat 90
Sub-surface targets:
- Autonomous Underwater Vehicle AUV62-AT
- Acoustic buoy
- Exercise sea mines
The Sea Range infrastructure
This test site is located in the Swedish archipelago outside of Stockholm. The main activities at this site are surface explosion and signature measurement trials.
- Maximum depth 40m
- No tide and well sheltered, calm sea state and secluded location
- Maximum charge weight 300kg TNT equivalent
The Blast Basin infrastructure
One of Europe’s largest facilities for surface explosion laboratory trials.
- Dimensions: Depth 6 m, Length 14 m, Width 10 m at the top, sloping sides down to 2 m width at the bottom
- Heavy and large objects: max 3000kg
- Maximum subsurface charge weight, 1kg TNT equivalent
Sonar test system
RAMSE – Sonar 701 is used for the verification of submarine and surface ship sonar systems.
The Research Tank Laboratory infrastructure
This advanced laboratory allows the testing, calibration and stress testing of underwater systems, equipment and devices such as sensors, sonars, hydrophones and underwater communication devices.
