A brief history of FMV
In 1936, the Swedish Prime Minister declared in a speech that as a non-allied nation, Sweden had to be independent, stating:
“Our country should manufacture its own weapons as much as possible. Every necessity to buy these from outside makes us more or less dependent on other states.”
Per Albin Hansson
Swedish Prime Minister, 1932-1946
Rarely has a political statement cemented such change in the industrial history of a country. As Sweden started to build up its defence industry and develop its own defence materiel, the need for national capabilities to test and evaluate the products emerged.
That same year, the first test centre to be established was the FMV Flight Test Centre in Linköping. This was then followed by FMV Land Test Centre in Karlsborg in 1942, FMV Vidsel Test Range in 1958 and FMV Naval Test Ranges in Karlskrona in 2000.
