Design approval and certifications

FMV FTC is the responsible design organization for all flying platforms within the Swedish Armed Forces and is fully approved to implement design changes and modify flying platforms for flight trials. We hold the following Rules of Military Aviation certificates:

  • Part M — Continuing Airworthiness
  • Part 145 — Approved Maintenance Organisation
  • Part 21 — Design Organisation Approval (DOA)

We are also well-equipped, with two Learjet 35 and one Sabreliner that can be used as flying test beds. We can accommodate live firing of airborne weapon systems, live deployment of electronic warfare countermeasures, live navigation and communication jamming as well as cross-domain scenarios. We also offer access to unique test areas such as Älvdalen Firing Range, Vidsel Test Range and Härnösand Naval Range.

History

1933: The Swedish Air Force establishes a testing department at Malmslätt in Linköping. The first tests include parachute-equipped dummies “bailing out” of Fokker S6 aircraft.

1950s: Tests predominantly focus on jet planes, including air-launched missiles.

1960s: Testing of 37 Viggen aircraft is undertaken.

1968: FMV is founded and the Swedish Air Force testing department at Malmslätt becomes part of the new authority as the FMV Flight Test Centre. Testing expands to include countermeasures, suits for high altitude, helmets for aviation, camera equipment and tow targets for aircraft including Saab 32 Lansen and Saab 35 Draken.

1980: Two Sabreliner aircraft are procured, to be used as flying test beds. Much of the 37 Viggen aircraft testing is conducted using these test beds.

1990s: The FMV Flight Test Centre is involved in the development and production of JAS 39 Gripen.

2013: FMV Flight Test Centre celebrates its 80 year anniversary.

2020: Saab establishes a test department for ground and flight tests of Gripen E at the centre.

2021: An aerial target flight department is established at FMV FTC.
